REASONS FOR
DESIGNATION
6247 GUELPH
LINE
The Mill, built of local limestone in
1837 from "Squire" James Cleaver, was essential to the nineteenth century
economic development of the Village of Lowville. A fire in 1938 caused the four-storey
mill to be reconstructed to its present form, as three-storeys with a
replacement roof. An operating mill
for more than a century, the building was converted in 1963 into a private
residence. These renovations
preserved the distinctive character of its exterior. The Mill, with its millpond and dam,
millrace and tailrace is a landmark in Lowville and makes a strong contribution
to the natural and heritage environment of the community.
