REASONS FOR DESIGNATION
630 BAYSHORE BOULEVARD
The “Big House” was the first permanent home built in the Brighton Beach Survey, developed by W. D. Flatt as a summer vacation area. Each of the homes in the area jointly owns an interest in the nearby beachfront. The home was built in 1920 for Joseph and Edith Hunter by Alexander Milne. Located at the fork in the road entering the survey the home has become the anchor of the neighbourhood. Although many alterations have changed the one and a-half storey, two bay structure home, the original charm of its craftsman style beginning remain. A panel front door, a stained glass window, the brick chimney on the left side of the home, original windows with concrete sills, voussoir brick arch above and wood trim, and centre front gable remain. The original cedar roof and craftsman style detailed front porch with round columns have been replaced with asphalt roof and pressure treated lumber, respectively.
