SUBJECT: Anti-idling By-law
File: 130-07

RECOMMENDATION:

That staff’s report on the pros and cons of a motor vehicle idling by-law be presented to the Community Development Committee at its meeting of November 29, 1999.

REPORT

Council, on March 29, 1999 passed the following resolution (Item CD-35-99-1):

That staff in consultation with the Sustainable Development Committee be directed to investigate the pros and cons of motor vehicle idling including the matter of enforcement and, if required, to present a by-law to prohibit unnecessary motor vehicle idling in the City of Burlington and to report back to the Community Development Committee at its meeting to be held on September 27, 1999;

and further that staff be directed to meet with members of the Sustainable Development Committee to discuss ways to re-implement the Corporation’s anti-idling efforts as it relates to City vehicles.

This item has been referred to the recently appointed Environment Co-ordinator for investigation. Preliminary discussions have been held with staff, with the Sustainable Development Committee and with staff from the City of Toronto and the City of London. To allow a thorough examination of the issues and possible approaches, it is recommended that a detailed report be provided to Committee at its 29 November 1999 meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Narelle Martin
Environmental Co-ordinator
