Be Emergency Ready and Stay Connected

Burlington, Ont.—April 30, 2018 — During the province-wide, annual Emergency Preparedness Week, the City of Burlington is reminding residents to be prepared for at least 72 hours during an emergency. The city is once again partnering with the Red Cross to recognize Emergency Preparedness Week, May 6 to 12.

Residents are invited to visit Civic Square on Monday, May 7 at 11 a.m. for a flag raising with Mayor Rick Goldring and local Canadian Red Cross representatives.

Emergency Preparedness Week is a Canada-wide initiative to increase awareness of individual and family preparedness. The province promotes the importance of families and individuals being prepared to take care of themselves for a minimum of 72 hours during an emergency. This year, the provincial theme is Be Emergency Ready – Stay Connected, to introduce Alert Ready, a national notification service that delivers critical and potentially life-saving emergency alert messages to Canadians with compatible mobile devices via LTE...

Burlington City Council adopts Grow Bold: Burlington’s new Official Plan

Burlington, Ont. – April 27, 2018—Burlington City Council has adopted Grow Bold: Burlington’s new Official Plan. A report recommending adoption of the plan was presented at a meeting of the Planning and Development Committee on April 24, 25 and 26, followed by a special meeting of City Council on April 26.

The policies in the new Official Plan bring to life the key directions in Burlington’s Strategic Plan 2015-2040, approved in April 2016. Through the strategic plan, Burlington City Council made the decision to protect the city’s rural area and grow up in key parts of the urban area. In the new Official Plan, five per cent of Burlington will see growth, targeted to the Mobility Hubs - the areas around the city’s GO stations and in downtown and uptown Burlington. Fifty per cent of the city will continue to be protected rural land; 34 per cent will remain established residential neighbourhoods; and 11 per centwill be land for employment.

City of Burlington receives 50-tree donation from Burlington Hydro

Burlington, Ont.—April 27, 2018 — The City of Burlington has received 50 trees in Nelson Park thanks to a donation from Burlington Hydro.

The donation is a result of Burlington Hydro’s paperless-billing campaign to donate a portion of cost-savings from reducing paper billing toward the purchase of trees.

The trees range from six to 12 feet tall, and are native to North America.  They will be planted in several locations throughout Nelson Park. The value of the tree donation is $17,000.

Tree types include:

  • Black and sugar maples
  • Bur and red oaks
  • Shagbark hickory
  • Basswood
  • Service berry
  • White elm
  • Eastern white pine
  • White spruce

Council approves 2018 Tax Levy Bylaw

Burlington, Ont.—April 25, 2018—Burlington City Council approved the 2018 Tax Levy Bylaw at its meeting on April 23, 2018. The bylaw allows the city to bill 2018 property taxes and set payment due dates for final tax bills on June 20 and Sept. 20, 2018. 

The 2018 Tax Levy Bylaw reflects the budget processes of both the city and Halton Region. The province provides the education tax rates. The overall tax increase is 2.64 per cent or $20.93 for each $100,000 of urban residential assessment. Tax impacts will vary by property based on actual changes in the assessed value of the property relative to others.

City of Burlington is committed to employee health and safety, recognizes Day of Mourning

Burlington, Ont.—April 24, 2018—Flags at Burlington’s City Hall and other city workplaces will be lowered to half-mast to honour the National Day of Mourning, on April 28.

The flags will be at half-mast from Friday, April 27 to Monday, April 30. The annual Day of Mourning is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness on the job or due to a work-related incident.

The National Day of Mourning is also a day to renew the commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace and prevent injuries, illnesses and deaths. The City of Burlington is participating in the Day of Mourning as an opportunity to honour the memory of all workers, nationwide, who have lost their lives or have been injured at work.

The city’s commitment includes continuing to reduce occupational health and safety risks and developing corporate health and safety standards and safe job procedures, with the goal of preventing workplace injuries and illnesses.
