The City of Burlington is investing $30,895 in five community projects as part of this year’s Neighbourhood Community Matching Fund program.
The selected groups will receive funding from the City, up to a maximum of $10,000. The community groups behind each project will then match the city’s funding with an equal contribution made through any combination of volunteer hours, donated services, donated materials and supplies or other funds raised, such as cash donations.
This year’s Neighbourhood Community Matching Fund recipients are:
Burlington Lawn Bowling
Establish a junior lawn bowling program.
LIFT Kids
Offer the community an afternoon drop-in program in the park for eight weeks in July and August. The free programs are offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Bolus Gardens Parkette and Hidden Valley Park for children between the ages of five to 11 years.
Park on the Path
Build a new parkette that is inclusive with accessible playground equipment, picnic tables and bike racks along the Waterfront Trail/bike path.
The Butt Stops Here
Install recycling units for discarded cigarette butts in key locations throughout the city. When these units are emptied, the contents are sent to the recycling company where they are turned to compost and hard plastic.
Voices of Burlington's Older Adults
The Voices of Burlington's Older Adults will produce a book of short stories, poems and other creative works. The book will be distributed to hospitals, libraries, community centres and retirement homes.
These projects will be worked on over the next year. Quotes
Mayor Marianne Meed-Ward
“There are so many great programs and initiatives led by our local residents and organizations that can sometimes get stalled simply due to insufficient funding. That’s why our Neighbourhood Community Matching Fund program is so important — it helps make these grass-roots projects happen. When we have community members and groups working together to make a local area better or for a particular cause, we all win. I look forward to seeing these initiatives come to life.”
Chris Glenn, Director of Parks and Recreation
“We are excited to see these community projects come to life. With an increase in the funding limit per project, we are helping people build an even better and stronger community. Each of these projects will benefit the community and goes back to the idea of inspiring and encouraging the community to champion and lead projects in the city.”
