“We would like to extend our thanks to everyone in the community who has continued to be engaged and actively participate in the discussion about the future of Burlington’s downtown. The two downtown concepts created represent just two of the possible ways we could achieve the vision for the downtown and accommodate the growth and development that will continue to happen in downtown Burlington. We look forward to continuing the discussion with City Council and the public at the Dec. 5 committee meeting.”
Quick Facts
- Early in 2019, Burlington City Council directed City staff to re-examine the downtown policies in Burlington’s adopted Official Plan, including the height and density of buildings. As part of this work, the City has hosted a series of public engagement opportunities designed to give the community the chance to provide meaningful input on the community’s vision for the downtown, both online and in person.
- During the first phase of public engagement in August and September 2019, participants were asked to identify what matters most to them about downtown Burlington; what they like and dislike; what they want to see protected as the downtown continues to grow; and what they want to see more of in the downtown.
- A feedback report summarizing what the City heard during the first phase of public engagement is available online at getinvolvedburlington.ca.
- Feedback gathered from the first phase of engagement was used to inform the development of two concepts that show two possible ways downtown Burlington could accommodate growth and development in the future. In the second phase of public engagement in October and November, participants were asked to share their input about these two concepts which will be used to inform the development of a single recommended concept for downtown Burlington that will be presented to Burlington City Council in early 2020.
- A vote to endorse any changes to the policies that will guide development in the downtown until 2031 will be made by Burlington City Council by March 2020.
