Burlington, Ont. - Aug. 4, 2014 -The City of Burlington and its emergency partners are responding tonight to flood conditions across Burlington.
City roads and highways are closed due to excessive water pooling in areas of the city, and residents are reporting flood conditions in backyards and basements.
“The city and our emergency partners are encouraging everyone to stay home if you can,” said Kim Phillips, general manager of community and corporate services. “With this much rain in a very short time, a number of families will be impacted. Please be prepared to help your neighbours in need.”
The Burlington Fire Department is responding to emergencies across the city. The city’s roads and parks maintenance staff are closing roads throughout the city and responding to an urgent flood conditions.
The city will be notifying residents of some of the more heavily affected areas households through a notification system.
Residents with flooded basements, where the water is not rising, should report the conditions to their insurance companies. If water is rising, and it’s safe to do so, residents should shut off power sources and gas. If the situation is life-threatening, call 911.
