The Building Code Act states that no person shall construct or demolish a building, or cause a building to be constructed or demolished, unless a permit has been issued by the Chief Building Official.
To obtain a demolition permit from the City, please follow the building permit application instructions. This covers demolition building permit requirements, including:
- Completing the Building Permit Application Form
- Submitting the Demolition Clearance Form, with signatures and approvals
- Submitting the drawings and documents listed on the Demolition Permit Requirements Checklist.
- Submitting the required permit application fees. Refer to the City’s building permit fee schedule for required fees.
In addition to obtaining a demolition permit from the City’s Building department, property owners should consider authorities whose services may be impacted by demolition. For example, property owners should contact Enbridge Gas to find out where underground utility lines are located before they start digging.

The City’s Demolition Service Disconnect & Site Preparation Checklist provides a recommended list of authorities who should be informed of demolition plans. It is in the property owner’s best interest to contact these authorities prior to demolition to ensure all necessary permissions are in place before work begins.
