For the purposes of citizen representation on Burlington Council, the City of Burlington is divided into six wards. Each ward is represented by a councillor. Council members are directly responsible for ensuring that the residents in each of their six wards are heard.

Role of the mayor
The role of the mayor, as defined by the Province of Ontario, is to:
- Act as the municipality's chief executive officer
- Participate as a member of Council for Halton Region
- Preside over City Council meetings so business can be carried out efficiently and effectively
- Provide information and recommendations to Council on policies, practices and procedures, and to ensure transparency and accountability
- Provide leadership to Council
- Represent the municipality at official functions
Role of a ward councillor
The role of a ward councillor, as defined by the Province of Ontario, is to:
- Determine which services the municipality provides
- Develop and evaluate the policies and programs of the municipality
- Ensure that administrative policies and practices are in place to implement the decisions of Council
- Ensure the accountability and transparency of the municipality's operations
- Maintain the financial integrity of the municipality
- Participate as a member of Council for Halton Region
- Represent the public and consider the well-being and interests of the municipality
