A proclamation is an official announcement issued by the Mayor designating a period of time such as a special day, week or month, in recognition of a significant event, person or organization in the City of Burlington.
The goal of a proclamation is to recognize commemorative dates, celebrate achievements and to raise public awareness of important issues in Burlington.
Proclamation criteria
Proclamations will be included in the Council agenda if they meet all of the following criteria:
- Submitted by representatives of a recognized charity with offices located in Burlington OR by a community group based in Burlington
- Will be issued only in respect of activities that support residents of the City of Burlington or related events taking place in Burlington
- Submitted with complete and updated wording for the proclamation, and confirmation that the wording has been approved by the relevant organization
- Must demonstrate respect and tolerance for all Burlington residents
- Should foster a sense of community
- Should not be used as a vehicle to attempt to influence government policy
- Does not promote any social, political, or religious views that could be considered divisive
- Requests must provide background information about the cause or event being proclaimed
Requests for proclamations must be resubmitted each year. We receive many requests for both new and annually recurring proclamations. Please allow a minimum of 30 days for a proclamation to be prepared and included in the Council agenda.
Proclamations will not be issued for:
- Matters of political controversy, ideological or religious beliefs or individual conviction
- Events or organizations with no direct connection to the City of Burlington
- Campaigns or events contrary to City policies of bylaws
- Campaigns intended for profit-making purposes

Use the below form to submit a request for a proclamation. Approved proclamations will be included in the Council Agenda for the month proclaimed if they meet all of the above criteria.
