Things You Need to Know

This page provides some useful information about what to expect when you come to court and a listing of the courtroom rules.  Please read this information carefully before you come to court.

What to Expect

• If you are coming to court to inquire about a ticket or make a payment, you may check at the front counter located immediately inside the entrance to the building.
• If you are coming to court to attend an already scheduled early resolution meeting (please check your notice for the time and place of your meeting), add your name to the list on the clipboard that has been set out for this purpose.  Have a seat in the lobby.  A Prosecutor will call you into the interview room in the order of arrival.  You may be required to attend the courtroom upon completion of your meeting with the Prosecutor.  Depending on the outcome of the meeting, the Prosecutor will advise you about the next steps.
• If you are coming to court for your scheduled trial date (please check your notice for the time and place of your trial), your name will be on the court list posted outside the courtroom where your trial is scheduled.  You must attend the courtroom that is indicated on the court list. If your name is not on the court list, please check at the front counter.  If court has not commenced, you may use the opportunity to speak to the Prosecutor.  If court is in session when you arrive, you must have a seat and wait until your name is called.

Courtroom Rules

• Proper attire is required - no shorts, tank tops, halter tops or hats to be worn in the courtroom.
• No chewing gum.
• No food or drinks allowed in the courtroom.
• Electronic communications devices are to be turned off or silenced - audio recording devices may only be used for note-taking purposes if the Justice of the Peace is first notified or gives express permission to do so.  There are to be no transmissions of court proceedings.  Talking on electronic communications devices is not permitted while court is in session.
• No photos or videos are to be taken without a court order.
• No talking while court is in session.
