Burlington, Ont.—March 28, 2025— On April 28, Canadians will return to ballot boxes to make their voices heard in what could be a defining election for the country. As Burlington residents consider the future and our shared place in it, the City continues to advocate for meaningful and robust partnership with all parties in support of our community’s goals in 2025 and beyond.
Strong, multi-level government relationships will preserve the great quality of life for everyone in Burlington. The City is eager to work with the Government of Canada over the mandate of the next federal government. For the City of Burlington, that means working together with the federal government to realize our strategic plan vision of enabling complete communities where people want to live. Our efforts will be guided by Burlington’s Plan From Vision to Focus 2022-2026.
Burlington is focused on five policy priorities that, through collaboration with the Government of Canada over the next four years, will help us make a difference.
We are encouraged to see cooperation across all levels of government to address the shared challenges of the U.S. tariff impact on our communities. Recognizing the local impact of these challenges, and that municipalities have a role to play, the City of Burlington is taking proactive steps to prioritize Canadian businesses and suppliers. In addition to launching a Buy Canadian webpage to equip businesses and residents with tools and resources, City Council has passed a ‘Buy Canadian’ resolution calling on the federal and provincial governments to work with municipalities on measures to protect Canadian consumers and businesses and remove any impediments to municipalities preferring Canadian companies for capital projects and supplies.
The City of Burlington supports the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), the national voice of municipal governments, in calling on the federal government to negotiate a new Municipal Growth Framework that would see the three orders of government commit to a more equitable sharing of existing taxes.
The City of Burlington remains committed to working with the federal government, the province, and local private and non-profit sector housing developers to address Canada’s housing crisis locally. Continuity of the Housing Accelerator Fund and additional federal support remain critical for Burlington to implement its Housing Strategy and increase affordable housing supply.
The number of people experiencing homelessness across Ontario and Canada is unprecedented. Burlington has been doing its part in addressing homelessness, but like many other municipalities, does not have the resources and expertise to take it on alone. The City continues to call on the federal and provincial governments to take action on homelessness in cities across Canada, including Burlington.
The City has made significant carbon reduction commitments detailed in our Climate Action Plan, and continued federal support will be critical in helping the City achieve these goals.

“We’re committed to working with our partners at the federal government to meet the needs of our community. We’re connecting with each candidate in this election to ensure they know our priorities. These include supporting businesses and residents through the trade war, affordable housing, solving the homelessness, mental health and addictions crisis, protecting our environment and negotiating a new financial arrangement with cities. Municipalities know our communities best, and we can’t solve the issues we face alone. We look forward to working with the new government. I encourage everyone to get out and vote to make your voice heard on the issues we face.”
