Headon Forest Drive Pedestrian Bridge Closed for Replacement

Overview

The City of Burlington has closed the Headon Forest Pedestrian Bridge to ensure public safety. During recent maintenance and repair work, it was determined the main structure of the bridge is in very poor condition. The steel structural supports under the wood decking have significant corrosion and can no longer support the bridge. The deterioration has occurred rapidly since the last inspection of the bridge. An inspection by a Structural Engineer confirmed the bridge must be closed for safety purposes.  

The bridge will remain closed until it can be replaced. It is anticipated the new bridge will be installed and open for use in spring 2023. All efforts are being made to advance this timeline, if possible. 

During the bridge closure, do not place wooden pallets or other structures in the creek, as this can create a blockage which can result in significant flooding. 

Please detour along Headon Forest Drive, Northampton Boulevard and Dundas Street or along Headon Forest Drive, Constable Henshaw Boulevard and Walkers Line to access Headon Forest Shopping Centre.

Update, Dec. 21, 2022

In early January (weather permitting) the work to replace the bridge will begin, including:

• fencing around the construction area
• silt and tree protection
• removal of the old bridge
• concrete repairs to the bridge foundations
• installation of the new bridge

The work is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete. For your safety, do not enter the construction zone.  We appreciate your continued cooperation, as we work to restore this important link in your community.

Update, Oct. 19, 2022

Over the past months, the City has been working toward replacing the bridge on an expedited timeline. To date, the following steps have been completed:

• An engineer has prepared the design
• A bridge supplier has been secured
• The required permit from Conservation Halton has been received
• A tender has been issued for a Contractor to install the new bridge

With the progress that has been made to date, we anticipate that the new bridge will be installed and open for use this winter.  As soon as a more specific timeline is available, we will provide another update.
