What is Fire Prevention Week

Each October, the Burlington Fire Department participates in a province-wide campaign to increase public awareness about the importance of fire prevention.

To commemorate Fire Prevention Week and Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, the City is engaging with residents in-person and online during the months of October and November to raise awareness about the importance of having working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.

Looking to help raise awareness about the importance of fire safety? Check out opportunities to engage and win prizes as part of Burlington Fire Department's “Sound On Save Lives” campaign.

Sound On. Save Lives.

The Burlington Fire Department’s Sound On. Save Lives smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm campaign runs between October and the end of November 2023.

Last year, Ontario broke its 20-year record of fire deaths with 133 fatalities.

This public safety campaign is not only a timely and necessary reminder of the critical importance of working smoke alarms but it’s personal.

Burlington’s own Fire Captain Ralph Baigent lost a dear friend in a house fire – a death that could have been prevented with a working smoke alarm. Now, Ralph along with members of the Burlington Fire Department are asking for your help in sharing his personal story to prevent more tragedies from happening.

Watch and share Ralph’s video story.

How YOU can share, save lives, and win!

Ralph’s story shows the sound of a working alarm can be the difference between life or death.

It also highlights the power each of us has to protect the lives of others. So, let’s look out for each other and make sure we’ve all got the Sound On.

Sharing is easy.

Share this lifesaving message with a friend, family member, co-worker or neighbour using social media, email, text, phone call or a good ol’ fashion face-to-face conversation – whatever works!
Contest Information

Take part in the “Sound On. Save Lives.” Instagram contest.

Between Oct. 5 to Nov. 24, 2023 encourage your friends and family to test their alarms. To participate, go to instagram to comment #SoundONBurlON on Ralph’s story and tag three friends for a chance to win one of several great prizes.

If saving lives is not enough incentive, we’ve also teamed up with Burlington Professional Firefighter’s Association IAFF1552 to offer great prizes to Burlington residents who participate.

The best part? It’s easy to be entered for a chance to win.

There are many prizes to be won for simply participating in the “Sound On. Save Lives.” Instagram contest. See contest rules below for full list of prizes.
