School Board Trustee By-Election: Voting takes place May 15 - 29

Burlington, Ont. — April 25, 2023 — A by-election for the seat of School Board Trustee for Halton District School Board (HDSB) - Burlington, Wards 1 and 2 will take place between May 15 and 29, 2023. Eligible voters in Wards 1 and 2 are encouraged to visit myvoteburlington.ca to make a voting plan in advance of casting their ballot.

Step 1: Check if you are eligible to vote in the by-election

Are you:

• A current English-public school board supporter
• Resident of Burlington (own or rent) in Ward 1 or Ward 2
• Non-resident, but you or your spouse own or rent residential property in Ward 1 or Ward 2
• 18 years of age or older
• A Canadian citizen
• Not prohibited from voting under any law

Step 2: Make sure you are on the Voters List

Being on the Voters List saves you time when you vote. You are mailed a Voter Information Letter at the beginning of May that outlines your voting options and in-person voting locations. To see if you are on the Voters List, go to myvoteburlington.ca.

Step 3: Pick your preferred voting option and date

There are three ways to vote:

• online, using Internet voting, from May 15 to 19
• in person at advance polls on May 24
• in person on election day, May 29

Step 4: Choose the location and time you want to vote

In-person advance polls will be open from 12 – 8 p.m. on May 24 at the following locations:

• Burlington Seniors Centre, Room 3, 2285 New St.
• La Salle Park Pavilion, Lower Level, 50 North Shore Blvd. W

Election day polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 29 at four locations:

• Burlington Seniors’ Centre, Room 4, 2285 New St.
• La Salle Park Pavilion, Lower Level, 50 North Shore Blvd. W
• Salvation Army Community Church, Fellowship Room, 2090 Prospect St
• Tyandaga Golf Clubhouse, Dining Room, 1265 Tyandaga Park Dr.

Quick Facts

• The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 sets the rules for elections and by-elections, including who is eligible to vote. More information is available in the 2022 Voters’ Guide – Ontario municipal council and school board elections.
• In Ontario, property owners are required to support a school system in their municipality through their property taxes, even if they do not have children. Voters will not be able to re-direct their school support for the HDSB School Trustee by-election. Individuals who voted for a school board trustee from Halton Catholic District School Board or either French school board during the 2022 Burlington Municipal Election in October 2022 are not eligible to vote in the by-election.
• In October 2022, people voted for their local municipal government officials with the City of Burlington, Halton Region and the school boards. Due to a vacancy for office of HDSB School Board Trustee, Burlington Wards 1 and 2, a by-election has been called to fill this seat.
