The City of Burlington has made changes to the Open-Air Burning Bylaw 65-2019 effective immediately along with changes to open-air burning permits.
Below are some of the changes:
As part of a pilot project, residents in north Aldershot can apply for an Open-Air Burning Permit between March 15 and Nov. 15, 2020.
Due to hazards of burning and the impact of climate change and air quality on our health and environment, burning brush should be considered a last resort. Rural residents are encouraged to take their unwanted brush to Halton Waste Management Site. If possible, mulching or recycling are also preferred options.
Fires of any kind are not permitted within the urban boundaries of the City of Burlington. Exemptions to this include:
If you have a concern that someone in your neighbourhood is burning and causing a safety concern, please call 905-637-8253.
Outdoor Cooking Fires |
The Ontario Fire Code allows for a small, confined outdoor cooking fire supervised at all times and used to cook food on a grill barbeque or spit that is commensurate with the type and quantity of food being cooked. Outdoor fire pits, chimineas and other portable open-air fire devices are generally intended for backyard bonfires and are not designed for cooking. Units designed for cooking are to be used for that purpose only and must be extinguished immediately after cooking. If the Burlington Fire Department responds to a complaint that does not comply with the Ontario Fire Code, the resident conducting the fire will be asked to extinguish the fire and may be given a violation notice. The notice may include possible prosecution and/or a cost recovery fee. |
Natural Gas and Propane Units |
Backyard fire pits, chimineas and outdoor burning devices that utilize propane or natural gas as a fuel supply are allowed to be used on your property. They do not produce smoke or odours that irritate neighbours. They are not permitted on apartment balconies and in some condominium complexes (check your building's rules). Be sure to review and follow all safety precautions noted with the unit. |
Smog Alert Days and Fire Bans |
Burning may be suspended due to local smog advisories or dry weather. If you are unsure please contact us at 905-637-8253. The use of any open flame devices in all areas of Burlington such as propane or natural gas fire pits, candles, patio torches, barbecues, weed torches, etc. is discouraged during these conditions. |
