In 2014, the City of Burlington updated its Site Alteration Bylaw. The bylaw helps to regulate how a piece of land can be altered, for example, by filling, grading or excavation.
Since the bylaw was last updated in 2003, soil disposal has increasingly become an issue in Southern Ontario. Stronger site alteration bylaw provisions are becoming necessary to minimize impacts to the environment and drainage patterns that can occur when excess soil is transported to another location.
Do I need a Site Alteration Permit?
Depending on the type of works you are proposing on your property, you may need a Site Alteration Permit prior to construction to ensure that you, your neighbours and/or the environment are not negatively impacted.
Site Alteration Permits are administered by the Capital Works Department.
To see if you require a Site Alteration Permit, view the Site Alteration Screening Form.
If required, please complete the Site Alteration Application form.
