The City of Burlington employs approximately 120 school crossing guards from September to June each year.
These dedicated individuals play a very important role in our community, ensuring children travel safely to and from school each weekday.
School crossing guards are legally permitted to stop traffic and assist school children to cross the street by raising their stop sign. All vehicles are required to come to a complete stop and remain stopped until the children and school crossing guard have left the road safely and the crossing guard's stop sign has been lowered.
Did you know Ontario introduced new rules at pedestrian crossovers and school crossings on Jan. 1, 2016?
The new rules require that all drivers, including cyclists, must wait for pedestrians to clear the entire roadway at school crossings and pedestrian crossovers.
It is the law for all drivers to stop in the presence of a crossing guard displaying a stop sign. Drivers and cyclists who violate this law could be fined anywhere from $150 to $500. Drivers may also face three demerit points and fines doubled in Community Safety Zones.
