In 2019, the City of Burlington will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the twinning with sister city Itabashi, Japan.
A Japanese garden has been constructed in the courtyard area behind Tansley Woods Community Centre. The construction began in the fall 2018 and will be open by July 1, 2019.
The design was inspired by gardens of the Itabashi area and local Burlington landscape including the escarpment and local flora.
Burlington residents were invited to join Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward and Itabashi, Japan, Mayor Takeshi Sakamoto as they officially opened the Itabashi Garden at Tansley Woods Community Centre at 10:45 a.m. on Monday, July 1, 2019.
The Itabashi Garden design was presented on April 6, 2019 at Tansley Woods Community Centre by Virginia Burt Designs and the City of Burlington. The presentation was open to the public with a great turnout.
