In October 2004, all City of Burlington arenas and the Burlington Seniors' Centre became heart-safe facilities with the installation of Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) units. The units are also available at city pools, City Hall and Tyandaga golf course. Burlington is currently a leader in Halton Region with regards to installing PAD units in its facilities.
The PAD units in Burlington are automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and can be operated by anyone. The units analyze the heart's electrical function, and voice and text instructions guide rescuers through the appropriate CPR and defibrillation steps. The units also record valuable medical information that is transferred to Joseph Brant Hospital.
The City of Burlington would like to encourage citizens to sign up for the CPR and PAD courses offered through parks and recreation, under the direction of Joseph Brant Hospital.
