We all need accessibility. People with disabilities are one of the fastest growing sectors of our population. Today, one in five people in Ontario lives with a disability and that number will increase as our population ages.
The City of Burlington has been working to improve accessibility long before the requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act was passed in 2005. We are committed to ensuring that people of all ages and abilities enjoy the same opportunities as they live, work, play, visit and invest in our city. Our goal is to ensure accessibility for the public we serve and our employees.
Burlington’s Accessibility Advisory Committee is a volunteer citizen committee that provides advice to Council and staff on the identification, removal and prevention of barriers to people with disabilities in municipal by-laws, policies, programs, services and facilities.
The city promotes a caring, inclusive and respectful community where city programs, services and facilities are available to people of all abilities. Our accessible city services include accessible communications, inclusion and accessibility to recreation programs, accessible transit, windrow clearing program and accessible parking.
Other ways we improve accessibility is through our Accessibility Design Standards, Corporate Accessibility Policy, our Multi-year Accessibility Plans and Annual Progress Reports and through a variety of public education projects.
