This page provides brief descriptions of the responsibilities of each city department.
Building and By-law Department |
Building and By-law Department is responsible for building, plumbing, heating, swimming pool, septic system, and sign permits. They are also responsible for by-law enforcement; building inspections, building code information and business and lottery licensing. |
Burlington Transit |
Burlington Transit manages the transit route network including scheduling, operations and maintenance of transit vehicles. Burlington Transit also manages the Handi-Van para-transit system. Learn more at www.burlingtontransit.ca |
Capital Works |
Capital Works is responsible for managing environmental issues; policy development; coordinating corporate initiatives to green city operations; design and construction of all roads, sidewalks, parks, open spaces, bridges and sewers; Geomatics; infrastructure management and engineering reviews for subdivisions, site plans and re-zonings. |
Clerks |
Clerks is responsible for providing support for Council and Committees; conducting municipal elections; maintaining corporate records, assessment rolls and by-laws; and providing commissioner of oath services. |
Community Planning |
Community Planning Department is responsible for Official Plan/planning policy intended to provide guidance for the development of the city; rezoning applications, subdivision and condominium applications; parkway belt applications; Niagara Escarpment Commission applications; and site plan applications. |
Finance |
Finance is responsible for financial and accounting management including budgets; financial reporting; tenders and general purchasing; collection of taxes and other revenues; tax certificates and assessment review. |
Fire Department |
The Burlington Fire Department is responsible for the prevention and suppression of fires; the provision of emergency and rescue services; fire prevention education and fire safety inspections. |
Human Resources |
Human Resources is responsible for attracting and retaining City employees; staff/labour relations; employee benefits; health and safety; pay research and staff training and development. |
Information Technology |
Information Technology Services is responsible for desktop hardware and software support, business application management and support, security, training and general consulting. Information Technology Services also manages the City's data centres, network, internet access, email and telephone systems. |
Legal |
Legal is responsible for preparing contracts; negotiating development and subdivision agreements; and representing the City before the Ontario Municipal Board and courts. |
Parks and Recreation |
Parks and Recreation is responsible for all matters relating to recreation and culture services, parks, facilities, special events, recreation centres, and direct and indirect recreational programs. |
Roads, Parks and Forestry |
Roads, Parks and Forestry is responsible for the maintenance of City of Burlington streets, sidewalks, parks, playgrounds, storm sewers, and creeks; snow clearing, forestry, cemetery operations, city signs production, and fleet services. |
Transportation Services |
Transportation Services is responsible for the delivery of various road-related services. These services include: the traffic signal system, traffic services, transportation planning, parking by-law enforcement and downtown parking. |
