Sakura (Cherry Blossom) Festival

The Burlington Mundialization Committee hosts Sakura (Cherry Blossom) Festival in honour of Burlington’s twin city, Itabashi, Japan.

Featuring:

• Greetings from Mayor Marianne Meed Ward and Consul General of Japan SASAYAMA Takuya
• A Japanese drumming performance from Do Kon Daiko
• A demonstration from Shudokan Family Karate
• An art display from students at Frontenac Public School, Florence Meares Public School and Fujimidai elementary school in Itabashi
• Aikido martial arts demonstration   
• Japanese dance by Suzuran Odori                                              
• A Koto performance from Logan Scott
• A singing and shamisen performance from Ten Ten Canada, featuring TAKAHASHI Aki
• A performance from dance group Sakuramai
• Taiko (drum), flutes, and shamisen by Nagata Shachu

Other events planned in honour of Burlington’s twin city, Itabashi, Japan, include:

View the Sakura trees

Cherry blossom trees are located at Spencer Smith Park. Take part in the centuries-old tradition of hanami, the Japanese term for flower viewing. Called sakura in Japan, these cherry blossom trees bloom at the end of April to early May.

Viewing Etiquette

Climbing the cherry trees, pulling on the branches and plucking off the blooms can damage the trees. Stay on existing trails to protect ecologically sensitive areas.
