For every new development project undertaken in Burlington, the city is responsible for determining how many parking spaces should be provided.
The amount of car parking is calculated using a number of factors such as the type of development (e.g. retail, medical office, restaurant, house) and the number of vehicles attracted to the development. The size and design of parking spaces are also determined by the parking standards.
The parking rates for non-residential land uses are now in force and effect.
The parking rates for residential land uses were appealed to the Local Planning Appeals Tribunal (LPAT).
These rates are therefore not in effect and will be the subject of an LPAT Hearing in 2020. No Hearing dates have been yet been set.
Why did the City of Burlington review its parking standards? |
The City of Burlington's parking standards were more than 30 years old. To help ensure the city's parking requirements accurately reflect current demand and emerging trends in transportation, the parking standards were reviewed and updated. The recommendations of the parking standards review will used as the basis for updating parking regulations and design standards for development in Burlington through the zoning bylaw. The new parking standards will help ensure the right number of parking spaces is required for each land use. |
What's happened so far with the parking standards review? |
The city hired IBI Group in 2016 to conduct a professional assessment of parking rates and standards in Burlington. IBI Group's final report was presented to Council members at the Committee of the Whole meeting on Sept. 25, 2017. City Council directed staff to obtain input from the public and report back with recommended parking rates. A staff report (PB-43-19) was considered by Burlington City Council at the June 10, 2019 meeting of Committee of the Whole. City Council directed staff to report back in Q3 2019 with Zoning By-law amendments to implement the recommended parking rates. The Planning and Development Committee of Council approved revised parking rates at a statutory public meeting on September 17, 2019 and these rates were approved by Council on September 23, 2019. |
