The City of Burlington is home to many crosswalks with school crossing guards and pedestrian crossovers to help keep you safe on our roads and sidewalks.
We have about 120 school crossing guards working for us from September to June each year. These dedicated individuals play a very important role in our community, ensuring children travel safely to and from school each weekday.
Crossing guards may legally stop traffic and help school children cross the street at crosswalks by raising their stop sign. All drivers and cyclists must come to a complete stop and remain stopped until the children and crossing guard have safely left the entire roadway and the crossing guard's stop sign has been lowered. Pedestrian crossovers are a type of road crossing where drivers and cyclists must stop for a pedestrian waiting to cross the road and wait for them to completely reach the other side before proceeding.
Understanding and following the rules of the road, whether you are a driver, pedestrian or cyclist, is the best way to keep pedestrian crossovers safe.
