The City has been working to implement an energy management program aimed at saving energy and reducing costs for city facilities for several years.
In 2013, the City was awarded the Community Conservation Award by the Ontario Power Authority, recognizing the success the City has had with its Corporate Energy Management Program and the Community Energy Plan.
On July 15, 2019, Council endorsed the City's Corporate Energy and Emissions Management Plan: 2019-2024. Targets are identified for 2024 as well as a path to be net carbon neutral by 2040.
City Energy Reporting
The Ontario Ministry of Energy mandates public reporting on the City's energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Energy Management Initiatives
Burlington's energy management initiatives include:
- Facility energy audits
- A building automation system for facility heating, cooling, ventilation and air conditioning and lighting systems (results in improved conservation, efficiency and comfort through occupancy controls, daylight harvesting, scheduling and temperature controls)
- Lighting retrofits
- LED traffic signals
- Energy efficient equipment (such as tankless hot water heaters and vending machine controls)
- Staff energy conservation competitions
- Green Fleet Strategy (includes use of hybrid technologies, biodiesel, GPS technology and right sizing vehicles)
