If you need to park on your street regularly, you can apply for a Citywide On-Street Residential Parking Permit. It will let you park your vehicle on your street all day and overnight, for up to two days in a row before you need to move it. Be sure to follow all parking rules because all other parking offences still apply and you don’t want to get a ticket.
Visit our team to submit your application at:
City Hall, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Staff will be helping with applications at these pop up locations:
Tansley Woods Community Centre, Saturday, May 10, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Brant Hills Community Centre, Friday, May 16, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Burlington Seniors Centre, Wednesday, May 21, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Permit parking is available on a street-by-street basis.
You need one permit for each car you’d like to park on your street. This permit lets you park on your street but it does not guarantee you a spot. Street parking is first come, first serve and you may not always get a spot in front of your house or even on your street.

If you are staying with your parents, we can give you the parking permit if the green Ontario vehicle permit has the same last name, but a different address. An example of this might be a student living away from home that is home for the summer.
If your driver’s licence doesn't have correct address, you prove where you live by showing:
While your parking permit lets you park for more than five hours and overnight, you still must follow all other traffic and parking rules. If you do not follow rules, bylaws and regulations, we can cancel your permit.
If you stay parked in the same location on your street for more than 48 hours in a row, your vehicle may be tagged and towed at the owners’ expense. The City reserves the right to cancel a permit at any time.
What is the Citywide On-Street Residential Parking Permit? |
The Citywide On-Street Residential Parking Permit allows residents to park their vehicle on their local residential street overnight/24-hours per day, up to 48-hours in a row. All other parking offences are applicable. One permit is required per license plate and purchasing a permit does not guarantee street parking. Street parking is first come, first served. Residential streets can experience high demands of visitor parking, especially during holidays and over summer break. |
Why are you introducing this program? |
In March, 2025 Council approved the creation of the Citywide On-Street Residential Parking Permit. This permit was created because of on-going growth pressures and a need to develop a long-term solution to accommodate long-duration and overnight parking needs. Some of the most common reasons residents need to be able to park on-street overnight:
A citywide on-street residential parking permit supports and encourages ARUs (Additional Residential Units). The City allows up to four units on suitable residential lots within the urban area. Allowing on-street parking offers extra parking for ARU tenants, especially if the unit is in a converted garage. |
Will all residential streets be able to accommodate permitted parking? |
No. We can’t guarantee that all residential streets can accommodate this parking permit. Staff will look at each street request to:
|
How do I know if I qualify to purchase the permit? |
To qualify for a permit you must:
Each vehicle needs its own permit. Additional permit requests will be considered on an individual basis, with priority given to occupants of ARUs (Additional Residential Units). |
Can I purchase a permit if I live in rural Burlington? |
No. The permit is only valid in residential areas. |
Can I purchase a permit if I live in Downtown Burlington? |
Yes. Downtown residents can purchase a permit as long as it is not for a street with metered/paid parking. Permits are not valid for streets that have paid parking. You may want to look at a permit for the downtown municipal parking lots. |
What is the cost of the Citywide On-Street Residential Parking Permit? |
The cost of the permit is $30 per month or $350 per year. |
If I live in Alton Village or in a neighbourhood that is designated NOSPP, do I have to purchase a Citywide permit? |
Not at this time. If you’re an Alton Village resident with an Alton Village Residential Parking Permit, you don’t need to do anything at this time. We will transition you to the Citywide permit in 2026. For residents who live in NOSPP designated areas (some parts of Alton, Orchard, Uptown and Sheldon Creek communities), there is no change to the NOSPP program right now. We will work with you to transition you from your existing parking program/permit to the Citywide On-Street Residential Permit over the next two years. |
If I have a Citywide On-Street Residential Parking Permit, am I guaranteed a parking space on my street? |
No. The permit does not guarantee a dedicated on-street parking space. It only gives the permitholder the ability to park in available on-street spaces. |
What if I only need to park on-street for a few days? Do I need to purchase a permit? |
No. The City offers a 15-day exemption program that permits vehicles to park on-street for up to 15 days (per plate), per calendar year. This program lets you park overnight on the street to help with short-term, temporary situations such as home renovations, visitors, etc. If you need to park on-street for more than 15 days, you will need a Citywide On-Street Residential Permit. |
If I purchase a permit, can I park on-street during snow events? |
No. During snow events on-street parking will be prohibited. We need to make sure our snowplows can safely and easily get down the street to plow. Please move your vehicle during snow events. If you leave your vehicles on-street, you may be ticketed and/or towed |
