Paying Property Taxes

There are many ways you can pay your property taxes with the City of Burlington:

  • Pre-authorized tax payment plan
  • With your financial institution
  • By mail
  • In-person drop off
  • Third party credit card processing companies
  • With Service Burlington at City Hall *temporarily relocated*
    • Service Burlington counter has been temporarily relocated to the third floor of 390 Brant Street (directly across from City Hall to the south, accessed by customers from the entrance off of Elgin Street)

Please allow sufficient time for payments to reach us by the due date, or penalty and interest charges will apply.

Pre-authorized tax payment plans

Learn how to pay your property taxes with a pre-authorized tax payment plan.

Payments with your financial institution

You can have your Canadian financial institution (banking provider) submit your property tax payments for you. A banking fee may apply. Please allow sufficient time for your bank to make payments to the City by the due date. Contact your bank for more information or to help you get set up with this option.

Telephone

You can register with your bank to pay your property taxes by phone. Call the bank's number found on the back of your personal debit card and following their instructions over the phone. To register, use your five-to seven-digit property tax account number found on the top-right side of your tax bill.

Online

You can register with your bank to pay your property taxes online. To register, use your five- to seven-digit property tax account number found on the top-right side of your tax bill.

Cash payments

If you would like to pay your property taxes in cash, please visit your local bank to make the payment.

Moving within Burlington

If you move within Burlington, we will assign you a new tax account number. Be sure to update your bill payment profile with your bank to reflect your new tax account number.

Payments by mail

You can mail payments by cheque to the City. We accept cheques postdated to the due dates as they help safeguard against late payments.

Mail your cheque(s) and remittance portion for proper credit to:

City of Burlington
PO Box 5080, 426 Brant St.
Burlington, ON L7R 4G4

Please make all cheques payable to the City of Burlington. Include your five- to seven-digit property tax account number in the memo.

In-person drop off payments

You may place a cheque in an envelope marked "Attention: Tax Department", with the remittance portion of your tax bill, and deposit it in the blue drop box outside 390 Brant St across from City Hall located at the Elgin Street entrance.

Please make all cheques payable to the City of Burlington and include your five- to seven-digit property tax account number in the memo.

If you would like to pay property taxes in cash, please visit your local bank to make the payment.

Payments with a third party credit card processing company

We do not accept direct credit card payments for property taxes. You can make tax payments with third party credit card processing companies, such as:

  • PaySimply
  • Paytm

These providers deliver your tax payments to the City on your behalf. We process payments on the date we receive the funds, which may be a few days after the payment is made. The provider may apply service charges and may restrict the types of credit cards accepted. Please refer to the provider's website for more information on terms and conditions of service, charges and payment processing times.

Payments with Service Burlington

Service Burlington counter has been temporarily relocated to the third floor of 390 Brant Street (directly across from City Hall to the south, accessed by customers from the entrance off of Elgin Street).

Cheque and debit payments are accepted. We do not accept cash payments. If you would like to pay property taxes in cash, please visit your local bank to make the payment.

Please make all cheques payable to the City of Burlington and include your five- to seven-digit property tax account number in the memo.

Due dates and billing

The interim tax bill is produced in January with two installment dates, typically in the third weeks of February and April. The interim bill is based on collecting half of last year's taxes.

Final billing occurs in June of each year after the budgets for Halton Region and the City have been approved, and the Province of Ontario's education tax rates have been determined. Final billing installment dates typically occur in the third weeks of June and September. Final taxes are based on the assessed value of the annual tax rate.

2023 Interim due dates

For those making regular installment payments:

  • The interim tax bill's first installment due date is Feb. 21, 2023 and second installment due date is April 21, 2023

For those making pre-authorized payments on the 10-month Payment Plan, taxes will be withdrawn on the first day of each month between January and October.

For those making pre-authorized payments on the Due Date Payment Plan:

  • The interim tax bill's first installment due date is Feb. 21, 2023 and second installment due date is April 21, 2023

Late payments

We apply a penalty charge of 1.25 per cent of the amount in default to your account, on the first day of default. We apply interest charges at the rate of 1.25 per cent on the last day of each month on the outstanding tax balance. When we apply a penalty charge in a given month, interest of 1.25 per cent will be prorated from the date of default.

Tax rates

The tax rates for the City, and for regional purposes, are determined as a result of the approval of the respective municipal budgets by City and Regional Council. The tax rates for all classes of property are calculated as a multiplier of the residential tax (RT) rate based on the transition ratios approved by Regional Council. The Province of Ontario establishes the tax rate for educational purposes.

2023 Interim tax rates
