Windows-to-the-Lake

Windows-to-the-Lake are small park settings along the shoreline, connecting Burlington residents to Lake Ontario. They are a place to meet, take a rest, observe nature, listen to the waves, watch weather move across the water, and enjoy the beauty of sunsets over the lake.

The City will be enhancing these connections to the water over the next two years.  Each site renewal will provide, at minimum, a paved pathway and accessible seating.

Project scope and schedule

Design and construction of lake property by location:

Appleby Place

• 2022-2023 – Design of shoreline reconstruction, design of parkland/window-to-the-lake
• July 2024 – Start of shoreline construction, followed by construction of parkland/window-to-the-lake
• December 2024 – Expected construction completion

The project will include:

• Tree removals on slope to lake (completed in February 2024)
• Shoreline reconstruction
• Removal of existing light standard
• Permeable pavement service area around existing forcemain utility area
• Concrete walkways
• Accessible ramp entrance
• New thin profile retaining wall adjacent to proposed ramp, to protect existing black locust trees
• Decorative pedestrian guard at top of lake bank
• Park I.D. sign and interpretive signage
• Site furnishings – benches, waste receptacle, bike rack, bollards
• Trees, shrubs and planting bed

Green Street

• 2021 – Design of shoreline reconstruction

Walkers Line

The City of Burlington is renewing the Walkers Line Window to the Lake.

• 2022 – Shoreline assessment, design of parkland/window-to-the-lake
• 2023 – Construction of parkland/window-to-the-lake
• October 2023 – Start of construction
• February 2024 – Construction complete – open to the public
