In the matter of the Ontario Heritage Act and in the matter of the lands in the City of Burlington known municipally as 400 Brant St.
Notice is hereby given that the City of Burlington intends to designate the above-noted properties under section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act.
Description of Property
400 Brant Street is located in downtown Burlington on the west side of Brant Street at the northwest corner of the intersection of Brant Street and Elgin Street. It is adjacent to Civic Square and Burlington City Hall. Situated on the property is a three-and-a-half-storey brick veneer building constructed in 1860.
Statement of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest
400 Brant Street is recommended for designation because of its design and physical value as a good, representative example of a 19th century hotel; its historical and associative value for its connection to the Zimmerman family; and its contextual value as a landmark building on a prominent corner. Many elements of the building’s exterior are proposed to be protected as heritage attributes.
More information on the proposed designation, including a full statement of cultural heritage value or interest and a complete list of heritage attributes, can be viewed in the Office of the City Clerk, First Floor, City Hall, 426 Brant St., during regular business hours or can be requested electronically by emailing heritage@burlington.ca.
Notice of Objection
Any person may, within 30 days after the date of the publication of this notice, serve written notice of objection to the proposed designation, together with a statement for the objection and all relevant facts to the City Clerk, The Corporation of the City of Burlington, 426 Brant St., P.O. Box 5013, Burlington, Ontario, L7R 3Z6.
