The City of Burlington purchased the former Robert Bateman High School building and surrounding greenspace to maintain this important community asset in public ownership.
With sustainability and community-building in mind, the City of Burlington has repurposed the former secondary school into a City-owned, multi-purpose, community-focused facility. The project supports Burlington’s objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in City-owned buildings by 2040. Phase 1 of the redevelopment included interior renovations, exterior building improvements, and site plan modifications to adapt the existing facility for community use.
A staff report to Council is being prepared and will outline potential next steps for Phase 2 of the project. Phase 2 will explore further uses for the remaining portions of the building and the final design and activation of the outdoor space. The report is expected to be brought forward to Council this spring.

“It has been inspiring to see the vision of Robert Bateman Community Centre come alive - with our educational, business and library partners, and of course our residents! It is now the largest community centre in our city, with more programming and space to come. I'm proud of the collaboration that made this milestone possible and excited to see this community hub foster relationships, spark creativity, and strengthen the sense of belonging that defines Burlington.”
“The Robert Bateman Community Centre represents an investment in the heart of our neighbourhood. This new space brings programs, services and opportunities closer to home for residents of all ages, and reflects what our community said they needed most—a welcoming place to gather, learn, play and connect. I’m thrilled to see this vision come to life and look forward to the many ways it will strengthen and support our Ward 5 community and beyond for years to come.”
