Headon Forest Drive Pedestrian Bridge Closed for Replacement

Overview

The City of Burlington has closed the Headon Forest Pedestrian Bridge to ensure public safety. During recent maintenance and repair work, it was determined the main structure of the bridge is in very poor condition. The steel structural supports under the wood decking have significant corrosion and can no longer support the bridge. The deterioration has occurred rapidly since the last inspection of the bridge. An inspection by a Structural Engineer confirmed the bridge must be closed for safety purposes.  

The bridge will remain closed until it can be replaced. It is anticipated the new bridge will be installed and open for use in spring 2023. All efforts are being made to advance this timeline, if possible. 

During the bridge closure, do not place wooden pallets or other structures in the creek, as this can create a blockage which can result in significant flooding.

Grindstone Creek Erosion Control Project at Howard Road

General Overview

The City of Burlington completed the Grindstone Creek Erosion Control Study Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) study between Waterdown Road and Hidden Valley Park. Based on field investigation, six areas of concern were identified, however only two areas of concern (3 and 4) were carried forward for the detailed design. A preferred alternative was selected for each area of concern; this includes local restorative works with natural channel design and/or erosion control. Implementing the preferred alternatives will achieve the study goal to reduce erosion, enhance/preserve terrestrial and aquatic habitat and reduce the risk to public safety and municipal infrastructure.

The City of Burlington will be starting restoration works during the summer of 2023. The restoration work will include bank protection, minor channel realignment and fish habitat improvements.

Grindstone Creek Erosion Control Project,Unsworth Ave. to Sumach Dr.

General Overview

Grindstone Creek Erosion Control Environmental Assessment (EA) Study completed in 2020 identified erosion and unstable slopes within the Grindstone Creek in Sumach Drive and Unsworth Avenue area. The study found four areas of concern (AOC) and recommended erosion control work to be done.

The City of Burlington will be starting the work this year. The work will include bank protection, minor channel realignment and fish habitat improvements.

Public Engagement

As public engagement is an important part of city projects, the City will give residents, neighbourhood businesses, community members and interested parties the chance to learn more about the project and comment at a Public Information Centre (PIC).

Online Public Information Centre

An Online Public Information Centre (PIC) will be hosted where the residents will have an opportunity to share input, concerns, and comments regarding the construction of the project.

Appleby Creek Erosion Control Project – Lakeshore Road to Lake Ontario

General Overview

Appleby Creek Erosion Control Environmental Assessment (EA) Study completed in 2020 identified channel erosion and slope destabilization within the Appleby Creek area from South Service Road to Lake Ontario. The EA recommended erosion reduction strategies to be completed in phases.

In the first phase, the City of Burlington will be doing Appleby Creek restoration works from upstream of Lakeshore Road to Lake Ontario for approximately 210m as shown in the image. The work will include bank protection, minor channel realignment, profile corrections for fish habitat improvements and provide protection to the Lakeshore Road bridge area.

Mohawk Park Path Improvements

The City of Burlington is renewing Mohawk Park.

Proposed Improvements

This project includes:

• New asphalt path connection
• Drainage repairs

What to Expect During Construction?

Your safety during the project is our priority.

The existing path will be closed during construction. A fence will be in place to secure the construction site.

There will be no access to Mohawk Gardens Public School and St. Patrick Catholic Elementary School through Mohawk Park.

Do not enter the construction site at any time.
