The three-lane indoor track is progressing well towards the same two key target dates.

The rink is expected to have ice in place by Fall 2025.

Other construction updates include:

  • All mechanical equipment has been delivered and finalizing installation

  • Rink slab pour currently being planned for spring

  • Interior finishing such as tiling, flooring currently in progress with millwork and furnishings to follow

  • Ball diamond in progress and preparing to establish turf, weather permitting

Update: July 10, 2024

The Skyway Community Centre and Park opening will be delayed until the spring 2025.

The delay is due to 18 straight days of rain in the spring which caused a delay in the completion of the roof, which then caused a delay in other trades.

We want to ensure when the building opens to the public that it is fully operational and complete.

A grand opening event will be planned and open to all in the spring.

Update: Sept. 29, 2022

The City has awarded the construction contract to Norlon Builders London Limited. Demolition will begin in October 2022 and construction is scheduled to be complete in the second quarter of 2024.

In April 2019 Council declared the Climate Emergency for the City of Burlington which,

  • Provides a pathway to reduce community-based greenhouse gas emissions to meet the target for Burlington to be net carbon neutral by 2050; and,

  • That Council and staff immediately increase the priority of the fight against climate change and apply a climate lens to the plans and actions of the City of Burlington.

Staff have worked with the design team Lennox Architects Inc. to design a facility that aligns with both the Climate Emergency Declaration and the Corporate Energy and Emissions Management Plan. This design reduces our annual emissions from a standard design by approximately 85% as there will be no use of gas at this facility.

  • The mechanical system for this facility will include geothermal as well as the use of recovered heat from the refrigeration plant to heat portions of the facility.

  • A zero emissions electric ice-resurfacer will be used at this facility instead of the standard compressed natural gas resurfacers.

  • Roof structure to support future solar panels.

Update: Nov. 1, 2020

The planned demolition and rebuild of Skyway Arena is on hold pending senior government funding contribution.

Skyway Arena is now being used as a temporary operations facility for City of Burlington Forestry staff and is not open to the public.

This facility is being used to assist with increasing the safety of City staff through physical distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Staff and vehicles will be relocated back to the RPF Operations Centre on Harvester Road once the pandemic is over or the rebuild is scheduled to begin.

Skyway Community Centre Construction

A New Community Centre will be built to replace the single pad, Skyway Arena. The existing arena will be demolished, and a new community centre will be built. The 48-year old building has reached a point where refrigeration equipment and building components have reached the end of their lifecycle, and repair and upgrades are required due environmental, accessibility and efficiency reasons.

Some of the features of the project include:

  • A full-sized 200’ x 85’ ice-pad
  • Multi-Use program space
  • Six change rooms with showers and washrooms
  • Warm and cold spectator seating with accessible options
  • Indoor multi-use track in a shared hallway
  • Lobby with customer service area and offices
  • Universal washrooms

The facility will include a low-carbon design to align with the City’s goal of having a carbon neutral operation. Energy-efficient systems, including geothermal heating and a fully electric, zero-emission ice resurfacer, thanks to a $1 million investment from the Government of Canada through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program.
