Statement from the Mayor on the Departure of the CAO
Burlington, Ont. — June 27, 2025 — It is with mixed emotions that we share that our Chief Administrative Officer, Hassaan Basit, will be taking a significant new role with the Province of Ontario effective August 4, 2025.
Hassaan will continue to serve Burlington residents, and all Ontarians, bringing two decades of transformative leadership, clear strategic vision and steadfast commitment to the role of upholding conservation values while guiding thoughtful growth. We welcome his expertise to the provincial leadership team.
While this news is bittersweet for the City of Burlington, it comes with my full support and sincere appreciation. Hassaan has served our municipality with integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to public service. Under his leadership, we have seen important progress on key initiatives, improvements in organizational efficiency, and a deepened focus on transparency and engagement. His leadership has helped shape a stronger administration, and his impact will be felt for years to come. He leaves a strong foundation and leadership team to carry forward the work he began.
In the coming days, I will convene conversations with council and staff to determine next steps to ensure leadership continuity in the CAO’s office and will report back to the public when there is more to share.
On behalf of Council, staff, and the residents of Burlington, I extend our heartfelt thanks to Hassaan and wish him every success in this next chapter of an already distinguished career.
Sincerely,
Marianne Meed Ward
“Serving as CAO of the City of Burlington has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my career. From day one, I was welcomed by a team whose passion for public service shines through in every corner of the organization. Together, we’ve built a stronger, more focused City—anchored in shared values and a deep commitment to our residents. Leaving is not easy, but I do so with immense pride, lasting gratitude, and a deep sense of purpose as I step into a new challenge where I hope to make a positive impact across the province.”
